His face steeled by resolve,
Jesus continues his journey to the cross.
Across that face play many different emotions
as he visits places and meets with people
for the last time, this side of resurrection—
Rueful at those who are caught up
in the nets they laid to trap him . . .
Pleasure at the responses of the Scribe
who loved God’s commandments and recognized
the truth in Jesus’ words.The thought of what’s to come intrudes,
as Jesus sets his face toward eternity
with a determination to complete his Father’s purpose,
filled with compassion for those whose paths cross his
during these final days.
